Saturday, Oct 25th, EMPOWERED Makes a Difference!

October 29, 2008

This past Saturday morning, EMPOWERED volunteers participated in James Haley VA Hospital’s Annual Make A Difference Day.  They met at the hospital where they picked up personalized gifts and then went out in groups to deliver these gifts to 49 Veterans living in nine Foster Homes.

“We were given our gifts and names and were sent off to deliver.  My husband and two children and I delivered to a home in Plant City where 3 veterans reside.  We gave them the gifts and sat and talked with them for about an hour.  They were very grateful and really enjoyed our company more than the gifts.  They spoke of their time in the military, their families and other fond memories.  We told them we would be back to see them - so my family will take these three veterans a gift each at Christmas.”  — Sara McMillan

“The event went very well and my wife and I delivered gifts to three veterans in Brandon.  Overall it was a wonderful event for EMPOWERED and all our members who attended seemed to really enjoy it.” — Patrick Goodwin

We hope to see you tomorrow!

Red Cross responds to 6 fires over the weekend

October 21, 2008

The American Red Cross Tampa Bay Chapter typically responds to one home fire every 24 hours in our tri-county area, covering Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties.  However this past Sunday evening, while the city was celebrating the Rays victory over the Boston Red Sox, the Red Cross was responding to its 6th fire of the weekend and 100th fire since July 1.

To grasp what that actually means and how prevalent home fires are in our community, you can check out this map of the Tampa Bay Chapter’s disaster responses since July 1.

The Red Cross knows that fires affect the lives of people in the Tampa Bay Community every single day.  As this is Fire Prevention Month, we hope that you will take a few minutes to prepare your own family, school and workplace for the worst.

If you would like to help the victims of house fires and other local disasters, please make a donation to the American Red Cross Tampa Bay Chapter on our website at www.redcrosstbc.org or by calling 1-877-741-1444.

Survey Finds Young Adults at Risk for Home Fires

October 6, 2008

According to a recent survey conducted by the American Red Cross and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) young adults, ages 18-24, are at risk for home fires because of specific actions they do or do not take.  For example, young adults are more likely than other respondents to state they will use the oven to keep the kitchen warm this winter.  They are also less likely to take precautionary steps such as removing the lint from the dryer filter after every load (one in three do not remove the lint after every load).

EMPOWERED strongly encourages the Tampa Bay young professional community to participate in National Fire Prevention Week, October 5-11th, by taking actions to prevent a fire in your personal home!  Together we can change the stats of this survey.  Check out our website for fire safety and preparedness tips.

Local American Red Cross Chapter Sends Additional Relief to Texas

September 17, 2008

The American Red Cross Tampa Bay Chapter will dispatch its Emergency Response Vehicle and two local volunteer drivers to Texas today. In the last 24 hours, 209 of these mobile feeding trucks have been mobilized in support of the Hurricane Ike relief efforts.
As soon as local authorities determine a community is safe and grant access to the residents, the American Red Cross is there delivering hot meals, water and clean-up supplies in the devastated neighborhoods.
Lynn Skyrms and Kel Bartley, the drivers bound for Texas, just returned from responding to Tropical Storm Fay. Together, they spent the last few weeks driving up and down Florida’s Atlantic Coast to provide food and comfort to the residents who were coping with and cleaning up from the floods Fay caused. Like the four other local disaster workers already in Texas, these drivers have committed to at least a three-week assignment.
To ensure this type of Red Cross support continues for disaster victims, we need your help. We are calling on everyone to support the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, which allows the Red Cross to provide help whenever and wherever disasters occur.
To deploy an Emergency Response Vehicle, like the one leaving tomorrow, to the scene of an out-of-state disaster costs $2,500 on average - including fuel, lodging for the drivers and maintenance for the vehicle. Because help can’t wait and the Disaster Relief Fund is empty, we are borrowing money to cover the costs of the hurricanes of 2008. This is not ideal. The need for the Red Cross has outpaced donations during a record year of disasters.
We need your help and so do the victims of thousands of disasters across the country each year, disasters like the hurricanes of 2008. Please make a financial gift to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, which enables the Red Cross to provide shelter, food, counseling and other assistance to victims of disaster.
Donors can go online to www.redcrosstbc.org or call 1-877-741-1444.

Hurricane Ike

September 15, 2008

[Tampa] September 14, 2008 — American Red Cross workers are providing shelter, food and emotional support for tens of thousands affected by Hurricane Ike. From Lake Charles, Louisiana, to Houston, Texas, the Red Cross is there, on the ground, providing relief. As Hurricane Ike came ashore, the Red Cross sheltered more than 20,000 people across four states, providing cots, blankets, toiletries and emotional support.

The Red Cross has over 1 million shelf stable meals available for distribution. There are 25-30 kitchens in place with the capability to serve up to 500,000 meals per day. These kitchens have been located in areas close to the impacted areas where fixed and mobile feeding operations will start. More than 120 mobile feed trucks stand ready to assist in the delivery of food, water and bulk supplies to people who are returning to their homes.

Although search and rescue is a mission for federal, state and local governments, the Red Cross is ready to accept those rescued into our evacuation shelters. The Red Cross has moved additional units of blood into Northern Texas to address possible medical needs resulting from the catastrophic storm.

This massive relief effort will be lead by one of the Tampa Bay Chapter’s premier leadership volunteers, who spent the past few weeks leading recovery efforts for Tropical Storm Fay within our own state. Ian Campbell of Pinellas County rode out the storm in Texas and is now helping to mobilize more than 2,000 disaster workers who traveled to the Gulf Coast to help.

As the Red Cross continues helping individuals and families battered by the 2008 storms and hurricanes, a national fundraising campaign has been launched to raise an initial $100 million to fill a Disaster Relief Fund depleted after an active year of disasters. The Disaster Relief Fund allows the Red Cross to provide emergency assistance to help victims of disasters meet their immediate needs for food, shelter, counseling and other critical services. www.redcross.org  or call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or 1-800-257-7575 (Spanish) to make a donation. You can also use your cell phone to donate $5 to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund by text messaging they keyword “GIVE” to “2HELP” (24357). You can send multiple donations depending on your carrier. Contributions will appear on monthly bills or be debited from a pre-paid account balance. All applicable text rates apply.

Editors Note: The American Red Cross has launched an online newsroom, http://hurricaneike.wordpress.com/ , to keep your staff informed about current relief operations underway in communities affected by Hurricane Ike.

Encourage loved ones to register as “Safe and Well”

August 29, 2008

As Hurricane Gustav is anticipated to make land-fall next week, the American Red Cross Tampa Bay Chapter is encouraging the Tampa Bay Community to contact family and friends in the potential impact area and ask them to register with the “Safe and Well” site if they evacuate.

*The Safe and Well Website allows those directly affected by a disaster to let their loved ones know of their well-being.

*For those that do not have internet access, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to register yourself and your family.  Follow the prompts for disaster information.

*Concerned family members who know the person’s phone number (home, cell or work) or a complete home address can search for the messages posted by those who self-register.

Stay Informed during this Hurricance Season by visiting the
American Red Cross Tampa Bay website.
